4 Actionable Tips for SEO Performance

Have you noticed that your search traffic and user engagement numbers have tapered off a bit recently?  Don’t panic — SEO issues happen to all of us from time to time.  We’ve even been there ourselves!

It’s time to take action to get your SEO back in top form and your KPIs (key performance indicators) going back in the right direction once again.  Here are four action steps you can take to push your numbers back up.

SEO Tip #1: Keywords are a Must

The start of any online marketing effort should be keywords. The reason keywords are important is that they are how your target audience will find the service or product you offer.

SEO keywordsWhen trying to determine if you have the right words to focus on, make sure you can say ‘yes’ to the following questions:

    • Are the people searching for this keyword going to want to buy what you’re selling?
    • Is there a clear way to convert traffic from this keyword into leads?
    • Is there enough search volume to make targeting this keyword worthwhile from a business perspective?

Once you’ve used Google Keyword Planner, SEM Rush, checked out what the competition is using, or used another source to identify the best keywords for your service or product, it’s time to put those keywords to work for you!  Follow these best practice steps:

    • Tag and optimize your strongest keywords in blog posts
    • Use hashtags in social media that support your keyword strategy
    • Ensure that each page of your website is targeting ‘one’ of your keywords

SEO Tip #2: Linking Building for Better SEO

Now that you know your keywords, it’s time to focus on link building.  While link building is a bit of an art form, there is still a great deal a small business or start-up can handle for themselves.

Here are a few actionable steps you can take to creating a link building strategy:

    • Fix all broken backlinks
    • Build a backlink army from other websites your target audience hangs out at
    • While ‘do follow’ links are always better, it’s okay to accept a few ‘no follow’ links while you’re building your SEO rankings
    •  Create links that don’t all have your keywords included (I know, sounds counter-intuitive, but trust us, it will help your SEO rankings in the long run)
    • Add internal links to pages within your website that support the page or blog content

SEO Tip #3: Make Content Work for You

Content is still The King when it comes to SEO rankings.  While quality far outweighs quantity, you still have to put forth the effort to create new content on a consistent basis.

SEO ContentReady to make The King work for you?  Incorporate these elements into your content strategy:

    • Repurpose old content that performed well — take a super popular blog and turn it into an infographic or a video
    • Incorporate your keyword into your catchy blog title and H2 and H3 section tags
    • Make your content super easy to scroll and read
    • Incorporate links to definitions or supporting reports within your blog posts
    • If you’re using a WordPress website, we recommend adding Yoast SEO plugin to your arsenal — it’s free an can really help to drive your overall SEO performance
    • Tag all images you use on your website and in blog postings with your keywords
    • Respond to blog comments and incorporate the appropriate keywords and hashtags in your responses
    • Post content on a consistent schedule…believe it or not, frequency has an impact

SEO Tip #4: Outsource SEO Marketing

SEO OutsourcingThere is a lot that goes into creating a successful SEO strategy.  While we gave you three tips that will surely help to get your SEO moving in the right direction, it takes a lot of dedicated effort to really outshine your competition.

If you’re small business or start-up, research outsourcing options.  A great SEO agency will offer a team of SEO experts who can work on your campaigns while you’re free to run your business.

4 Marketing Ideas & Tips for Small Business Owners

As you prepare for the summer and start planning for your 2019 holiday season marketing ramp-up, now is a great time to think about how to get the most bang for your digital marketing buck.  As a small business owner, your time is just as valuable as your money, so incorporating marketing ideas into your strategy that won’t take up too much of your time or cost you more than you can afford are vital.

That’s why we’ve put together a list of four marketing ideas that we know will help you start your summer off with a bang, get you lined up for a rocking holiday season!

Develop a Cleaning Routine

Email List AuditBelieve it or not, data cleaning shouldn’t be an annual event.  Keep your emails flowing freely and your sender reputation on tack by incorporating a quarterly or monthly data cleaning strategy.  This includes taking time to perform an email list audit and review your email deliverability scores.

Email deliverability is more than just a buzzword marketers toss around.  It’s at the core of any successful marketing strategy.  If your email deliverability rate is low, then chances are your marketing emails aren’t reaching your target audience.  Keep your email deliverability rates up by keeping your email lists clean and updated.

You can use tools like those found on to help you keep tabs on your email deliverability performance rates and sender reputation.  They have affordable rates and will help free up your time so you can focus on some of the more critical day-to-day aspects of your small business.

Optimize Targeted Content

Small Business MarketingWhile it’s normal to want to sell, sell, sell in everything you create, post, and send to your customers, try and keep your sales pitching to a healthy level.  Incorporate educational content, fun information or videos, and thank you offers along with your product sales content.

If users know that all your emails ever contain is a marketing pitch, they aren’t going to open them.  And, if they don’t open them, ISPs will begin to take note and they might start routing your marketing emails directly to the spam folder going forward.

When it comes to emails, make sure they are truly optimized for performance.  Sadly, most users will only scan an email.  Plus, users today received so many emails, you want to ensure your emails stand out in a crowded inbox.  Here are four steps to help you streamline for optimal performance:

  1. Sender Address – Make sure your emails are coming from a recognizable sender name, preferably a business address.
  2. Catchy Subject Line.- Does it tell the reader what’s next? Is what’s next worth clicking? If not, you’d better head back to the drawing board.
  3. Eyecatching Design – Is your content optimized for mobile viewing? Does it deliver on the promise of your subject line? Is it visually appealing and easy to read?
  4. Create a Clear Call-to-Action – What is your call-to-action (CTA)? Do the recipients know what you want them to do? Is it easy for them to do it?  Make it clear and super easy for them to engage with!

Focus on Growing

Small Business MarketingGrowing your business doesn’t only happen via social media posting and marketing emails, it happens out in the real world.  I know…actually talking to people….gasp!

There are so many inexpensive ways you can go about growing your business just through everyday activities and events.  Here are a few for you to consider:

  • Business Cards – Yep, we said it…business cards!  Business cards give you a quick way to exchange information and they can lend some credibility and professionalism, too, so always have them handy to whip out when you meet a great connection.
  • Client Referrals – Let your current clients know that if they send you a referral that turns into a customer, you’ll give them 10% off their next purchase or invoice. Referrals from clients will give you warm, qualified leads.
  • Network and Get Involved in Your Community – Networking is important and a quick way to start promoting your products and services is by creating more awareness about your business in the local community. Find out how you can benefit your community and how your products/services can make their life better.
  • Grab a Partner – Partnering up with other small businesses—officially or unofficially—is a great way to go. This could be a vendor, but it could also be other businesses in complementary industries that share a target audience with you.
  • Claim Your Free Listing – Your business can gain advantages with better exposure online, and you can start building your online presence by claiming free business listings.

Boost Your Social Media Game

Small Business Social MarketingNo surprise here, but if you want to get noticed, then you’re gonna need to get social online!  Regardless of the generation, you’ll find a large portion of your target audience online.

If you need a quick guide to the world of “play to play” social advertising, these links are a great place to start:

Along with the traditional social media content, visual content continues to grow in popularity thanks to platforms such as Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube.  This shouldn’t really be a shock since the human brain processes images 60-times faster than words (traditional content).

If you want to make a name for yourself, have fun with your visual content!  Fun content gets shared and the more it gets shared, the more people (prospective new customers) will see it.  Add short videos to your Snapchat or Instagram story that introduce your audience to your staff or promote a flash sale.  You don’t need a full agency commercial shooting to create visual content that will make a splash online.

SEO Strategies for Your Small Business

Creating a website and business pages on social platforms such as Facebook and Twitter are basic requirements for owning a business in today’s world.  However, just having these isn’t enough to make an impact.  To maximize these tools and increase your chances of being found in local searches online, you need to enhance them through SEO (search engine optimization).

SEO is an ongoing process and not something you do once and simply forget about.  It’s also important to acknowledge that first-page ranking results aren’t something that will occur overnight — it takes weeks, sometimes months depending on the market and industry, to achieve.

To help get you started along your SEO journey, here are four fundamentals that we think every small business should include in their SEO strategy.

Titles and Meta Tags

Titles and meta tags are what search engines use and display to users during search results.  They are quick, bite-sized pieces of content that let potential customers know what your website or content is about.  Each page of your website will incorporate these elements.

If you are using a platform like WordPress or GoDaddy, there is typically a place in your web page creation template that will allow you to enter this information.  Here are few things to keep in mind when you are creating these elements:

  • Your title length should be between 50 and 60 characters
  • Your meta description length should be between 160 and 200 characters
  • You want to incorporate key search terms that relate to your page topic and that a user will recognize when they are scanning search results

As you’re creating your titles and meta tags for your web pages, keep in mind that consumers skim search results, so you want to make your information concise, easily readable, and digestible in order to grab their attention.

Be Socially Active Daily

One of the least available commodities a small business owner or entrepreneur has available is time; however, when it comes to creating a strong online presence, you need to carve out a little bit of uninterrupted time each day to achieve success.

Even if it’s just 30 minutes a day, spend time creating content and engaging with your online followers.  Here are a few ideas of things you can post about each day:

  • Photos of daily life at your business (this creates a more personal relationship with your followers)
  • Posts about what’s going on in your local community (events or good news)
  • Share local or industry related content
  • Share a funny meme
  • Post about upcoming events or promotions
  • Create a post thanking your customers for their loyalty and support
  • Create a survey about your business or a local event
  • Like or respond to what your followers are saying about your posts

When you engage daily, search engines will reward you and will include your activity in their search ranking algorithms.  Basically, the more active you are, the higher you’ll appear in search results and the more likely you’ll be to be found by potential new customers.

Create Local Content

One of the most honest mistakes businesses make online is to create content that only talks about themselves.  While you want to convey a sense of who your business is what you’re all about, you also want to show that you’re a part of your local community and you care about others.  Additionally, showing interest in your local community is one of the best ways to gain exposure, build relationships with your audience (current and future customers), and show a different side of your business.

See something amazing or worthwhile happen when you were out and about this past weekend?  Then write about it!  It shows you’re personal side and it also lets your customers know that you truly are a part of the community and that you’re out there engaging with them.

Whether it is a post or content you create or it’s a post or article you simply share to your page, make an effort to promote local activities, events, and good news in your daily social postings.

Reviews and Online Directories

This is an easy win and one that many businesses simply overlook — online reviews and directories.  There are so many online directories already out there, so take advantage of them.  Getting your business listed on these platforms will yield huge rewards in your local search rankings.  Here are a few to check out:

  • Yelp
  • Angie’s List
  • CitySearch
  • Yext
  • SuperPages

All of these directories include reviews, so make sure you ask your customers to leave feedback for you.  Not only will it impact your rankings, it will also lend a sense of credibility to your business to potential new customers who are doing research online.

Finally, claim your business on Google My Business.  The verification process is a simple one and, like seeing reviews from other customers, it will legitimize your business with future customers.

Top 5 Social Media Sites for Artists

By now I’m sure you’re very aware that social media marketing is a must for any artist.  What you might not know though is that:

  • Certain social media platforms are better than others for creatives
  • And, you shouldn’t have the same social media strategy and frame of mind for your professional profiles as you do for your personal profiles (keep your creative personality separate from your personal online personality)

To help get you started, here are a few details and tips for the top five social sites we think are best for creatives of all styles and backgrounds.

# 1- Instagram

Many people use Instagram every day to show their artwork too, well, everyone! It may seem crazy at first, seeing as everyone on Instagram has many different styles of art, but rest assured that you’ll get used to the flow of things on this site very soon.

When you post your art on Instagram, a ton of people probably won’t flock to it right away but not to worry!  With certain hashtags like #TrendyTuesday, #FearlessFriday, and many more, you can launch your images straight into trending hashtags lists where more people will see your work!

Another helpful tip is to follow some people and make awesome friends with unique personalities! Follow galleries, other artists, boutiques and art districts, and even artist managers and reps.  Collab with people and spread your art through this awesome website!  Oh and don’t forget to always like your posts from your personal Instagram page too (that way the people who you know personally will be introduced to your artwork…as will the people they follow).

#2- Tumblr

Tumblr is a fantastic site well known for sharing amazing pieces of art!  You’ll discover that so people on here are friendly and like to help each other out.  Bonus…if you’re looking for pointers on art pieces or just awesome friends that are into the same type of art you’re into, then this is the site for you!

Tumblr is much more relaxed than the other social platforms, so have fun and let your inner creativity shine!

#3- Twitter

While it might not be popular with everyone, Twitter is a useful site to show off your work and to get noticed in search results (a little social marketing trick).  You can tweet images onto the platform and gain likes from many people!

Hashtags are a high priority here as well, so make sure to use them all the time to help you get noticed sooner! Everyone on here is really social and it moves at lightning speed, so there is always something new to chat about.  If you’re a social butterfly then Twitter is the totally perfect site for you!

#4- Deviantart

Deviantart is a truly unique site where art is key.  You can publish art of any style onto this platform, including personal literature, with ease. You may not get much attention at first, but if you can keep on top of your profile then people will start to notice you soon enough!

The community is very supportive and helpful, and they have an awesome core membership program which gives you more benefits than a regular member!

#5- Facebook

Facebook is another great social place where you can post your works of art.  ‘Facebook?  Ugh, my mom is on there!’  Okay, we know it’s super cool, but don’t knock it because not only will it improve your search results (again, a social media marketing trick we use), but your family members can help support you and extend your reach by sharing your art with people they know.

Plus, but on this site, your family members can have a much easier time finding you and you can be happy with them not know what other sites you post on! (Mommy Media Group understands the need for privacy of fan bases and certain pieces of art, even from the ones we love!)

Improve Website Traffic
Content Development, Digital Marketing, Search Engine Optimization

3 Web Traffic Conversion Techniques

Having a small business used to mean that you had a small target audience.  It was easy to put up a sign, buy a radio spot, lease a billboard or post flyers to get your business noticed.

However, in today’s global marketplace, your target audience is virtually limitless.  As such, the trick to marketing online has more to do with getting your message out there to as many people as possible (expanding your reach) and turning potential customers who visit your website into paying customers (converting your web traffic).

Here are three techniques you can deploy immediately to help convert your website traffic into paying customers.

Create Engage and Sharable SEO Rich Content

First things first, you want all your content and all pages on your website to be search engine optimized (SEO).  This means that you use words on your website that your audience searches for (keywords), tag your images with searchable keywords words and phrases, and incorporate keywords into your blogs and social posts.  This will make your website perform better in search rankings and increase your possibility of being found by your target audience.

Secondly, create and post fresh content consistently. Whether it’s once a day or once a week, get new content on your website consistently.  This will impact your search rankings and give your target audience a reason to keep coming back.

As an added bonus, if you create content that is valuable, then users will be more likely to give you their information in return.  For example, if you offer a discount or coupon, prompt the user to provide you with their name and/or email address before they are able to access the promo.  This will give you an opportunity to capture information for your sales and marketing lists and give your prospect something to redeem online or in person at your business.

Finally, you want the content you create to be entertaining and engaging.  The more engaging it is, the likely the chances are that your audience will share it with others.

Reporting and Metrics are Keys to Success

Reporting and metrics are critical because it will tell you most of what you need to know to create a successful online digital and social marketing strategy.

If you use Google Analytics, you will learn a variety of items about your audience such as:

  • the geographics and demographics of your audience
  • where they spend the most time on your website
  • what content or promotional offers get shared most often
  • how long they spend on your website per session and how many are repeat views/traffic

When you know what websites or regions of the globe your users are coming from, you can then create an ad strategy that targets those areas.  You’ll also be able to beef up content on pages where users hang out and add promotional offers on pages where they leave (in an effort to keep them engaged).

Knowing your metrics and reporting facts will allow you to create a strategy that performs optimally and will allow you to see quickly if you are doing better than you did the week or month before or if you need to break out the drawing board and revisit your marketing plans.

Ask Your Audience

As they are who you designed your website and products for, why not ask your website visitors what they think about your products, services, and website?  They will know, better than anyone, if your messaging is making a connection if your offers are what entice them to spend more with you, and if you have the right service and product offerings.

Any feedback they provide, be it positive or negative, is healthy and should definitely be taken into consideration for future marketing and product activities.  Add a quick survey to your website asking about possible products or services, or create a quick poll on your social channels asking your audience to rate your website, products or services.

Not only will this provide you with invaluable information, it will also signal to your audience that you care about them and want to include them.  This type of activities is known to build brand loyalty and fosters long-term customer relationships.

Top 5 Instagram Strategies for Artists and Creatives

You want to get your out there and grow your audience on Instagram, but let’s face it, you just don’t have tons of time to spare.  Here are five, quick strategies you can use to help get found and grow your followers on Instagram.

Instagram Strategy: Hashtags

Using hashtags on Instagram is an extremely useful way to find your audience and keep your work in the flow of popularity. Don’t go crazy with random hashtags, but if the hashtag fits, then include it in a list at the bottom of your post.

If you want your work out there, you’ll definitely need to keep track of what hashtags you’ve used that have performed well.

Instagram Strategy: Stay on Script

Define your message and stay on the script!  You should create post consistently, whether that’s daily or weekly, and make sure that it’s eye-catching and reflective of you and your work.

Ensure that your posts and photos are what your followers want to see and that it’s something they can engage with, be it via commenting or sharing with others.

Change is always interesting but you’ll never want to entirely flip the script.  If you want to mix things up a bit, try adding new things, taking out the dead old ones, and keeping the old classics going!

Instagram Strategy: Photo Finishes

Photos are essentially life on Instagram, so it’s critically important, of course, that you make sure you are delivering the best kinds of photos to your followers. Top notch cameras are great but aren’t required.

You can capture amazing photos with today’s smartphones and use the filters available on Instagram and other sites, like Canva, to enhance your images.  You want your photos to have personality and standout.

Instagram Strategy: Spread the Word

While Instagram is a wonderful website, it’s always a good idea to have more of your product spread out on several platforms.

There are many mainstream social platforms to use such as Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest, but make sure you check out others like Deviant Art and Tumblr. Spreading your content through various platforms will give you more exposure to each platform which will help build up the popularity of your works.

Instagram Strategy: Community Insight

Talking to other artists who have been using Instagram for a long time is a wonderful idea. They can tell you things about the site and give you advice on how to run your page.

You can toss ideas around with these users and collab with them to make awesome new content to help grow your collective followings.

Tips for Instagram Success

7 Tips for Using Instagram for Business

So many small businesses miss out on the opportunity of Instagram due to either their lack of understanding how the platform works or how to find and grow their audience. When it comes to uploading images to Instagram, the two main avenues are either via the app on your phone or via a social media management portal like Sprout Social or Hootsuite (note: unless you’re using one of the social media management portals, you cannot load images to Instagram via a laptop or desktop).

Let’s explore seven tips you can use immediately to grow your followers on Instagram and increase your sales leads.

Show Off Your Product Creatively on Instagram

Pictures and creativity are the main focus of this social platform, so you’ll want to get creative when you’re introducing your products to your audience.  The more creative your images, the more engagement you’ll receive.

To make yourself stand out, don’t just simply snap a photo of your product or someone using your services.  You’ll want the photo to stand out so if you’re a coffee shop, for example, have someone holding a cup of coffee about to drink it while sitting in your shop.  You can then use photo enhancing tools or apps, such as Canva, to add filter or captions to give your image that professional and fun final touch.  Instagram also gives you tons of filters to play with as well during the upload process.

Spend Time on Your Instagram Profile

Having an informational, entertaining and eye-catching profile will also be crucial in bringing in followers.

You’ll want your profile to be filled with a unique story, top of the line photo quality, and hashtags and links (both of which will help potential new followers and leads find you).  Spend 10-15 minutes looking at the profiles of your competitors to see what they are doing and use this as a launching point for your profile.

Grow Your Audience on Instagram Through Following

Consistent posting is important on Instagram, but so is the process of following and unfollowing users.

You’ll want to perform a search based on hashtags or keywords to find your audience.  Another great place to find them is to check out who is following your competitors.  Posting daily keeps your account active and ensure your audience has a reason to engage with you. Make sure you like other posts too — this shows you’re active and that you’re not just about promoting yourself.

Daily posting, following, and liking of other’s posts shows your audience that you care about them and they may show off your company to their friends and family to spread more info about your business.

Developing Anticipation and Awesome Offers on Instagram

Posting offers is a great way to get more followers for your Instagram account. And to keep things interesting, consider posting teaser images and news about upcoming projects and products.  You could create a daily countdown until the release of a big product, post a puzzle for your audience to solve in order to figure out something about an upcoming project, or perhaps post a collage of random photos that when put all together will make an image of your soon to be launched product.

Have fun, build excitement and anticipation and now only will your followers engage, they will be more likely to share with others, thereby expanding your reach and potential audience.

Review and Adjust Your Instagram Strategy

Twice a month, carve out some time to take a step back and review your Instagram’s successes and losses. Look at how many likes certain posts received and organized which is the most popular to the least popular. From that point, make a comparison between the most popular and the least and take notes on what’s different.

Once you know what your audience is responding to, you can adjust your strategy for the next few weeks of Instagram posts.

Instagram Loves Hashtags

Using hashtags on Instagram is critical when it comes to getting found and growing your audience.  Hashtags will expand your reach and get your message/posts seen by more prospects.

To find hashtags to use, check out your competitors to see what they are using.  You can also do searches to see what some of the most popular hashtags are for your industry.

Collaborate and Share on Instagram

Small businesses should stick together to help boost each other up. Joining up with others and developing products, promotions or simply cross-promoting together will get their followers and your followers see the potential of each of your businesses and grow both of your audiences.

5 Tips for Engaging Your Audience on LinkedIn

LinkedIn is an amazing platform for spreading your messaging and sourcing prospects.  However, many small business owners are intimidated by the platform and think that it’s only beneficial for medium to large size businesses.

If you’re a B2B business, regardless of your size or geographic location, LinkedIn could provide a huge boost to your sales pipeline!  Here are five tips to help you achieve success on LinkedIn:

#1) Post Frequently

The top thing to do to keep connected to your audience on LinkedIn is to post blogs and articles rather frequently.  This can include content you’ve created as well as content you find interesting that you’ve curated from others.  There are lots of sites and apps you can use to help you find great content to curate. As long as it’s information that positions you as a thought leader and that you’ll audience will find interesting, it’s the kind of content you want to post and comment on daily.

It would be a good idea to set up a posting schedule to alert you of upcoming posts and ensure that you never miss any…your followers will appreciate it in the future!

#2) Create Mixed Content

People can get bored reading the same things over and over again, so spice it up sometimes!  Maybe you love doing arty things, you should challenge yourself and make a day where you try something crazy then post the video! Never made a cake before? Well grab a recipe online and try your hand at it!

Even though it’s online, it’s still all about building relationships.  Add a splash of your personality into what you’re writing; this way your audience will start to develop a personal connection with you as well as discovering that you know your stuff!

#3) Read Your Comments

Comments are important, so pay attention to what your audience is saying to the content you are posting.  Sure, some may be silly and have nothing to do with your business, but your fans (a.k.a. target audience) are down there in that deep dark abyss trying to reach out to you and form a connection.  Dive deep into it and engage with them!  You will discover that it’s worth it all to keep your fans happy.

Plus, through these online comments and responses, you’ll surely discover a little more about what they are interested in, which could lead to new products or service development down the road.

#4) Keep Improving

Continual improvement is a goal most of us have in our personal lives, but it’s also important for us to maintain the same goal in our professional life, for both yourself and your business.  To keep yourself in check, it’s important to keep track of where your weak points are just as much as your strong points.

Check in on your LinkedIn account at least three times a week, if not daily, to make sure everything is in order and to see what your audience is saying and responding to.  It might be a good idea to keep a notebook to help you keep track of what your audience likes. But don’t limit yourself to those, feel free to throw out some of those awesome ideas you have, you never know what will hit!

#5-Make Yourself Rememberable

With all the noise online, you want to make an impression and stand out from the others.  Discover what it is that makes you, your services and company different from everyone else.  Create a story around it and spread the word!

It’s important to make yourself known for something specific so that your audience can tell others about and remember who you are. Make a trademark for yourself and an attitude to go with your product.

Not sure where to start with your story?  Contact Mommy Media Group and let us help you craft a story that will tell the entire world what it is that makes your company the one they want to do business with in the future.
